Beyond Pride Month: Important LGBTQIA+ Days to Include in Your Marketing Strategy
Last week, we talked about rainbow washing and why it is bad for business. I offered some tips on things you can do in order to avoid it. One tip was to celebrate other days that are important to the queer community.
Today, we are going to talk about those other LGBTQIA+ days that are important to us, as celebrations, remembrances, or calls for visibility. While this won’t be a comprehensive list, I will give you some starting points and suggestions to add to your marketing calendar. From there, you’ll also be able to use this starting point to do your own research to find other LGBTQIA+ days you want to include in your marketing calendar.
And if you would like to shortcut all that effort so you can focus on the core of your business, set up a 15 minute call with me where I can get a sense of your business and goals and how my expert Pride copywriting can save you time and money while creating authentic connections with your local queer community.
What Kinds of Days Does the Queer Community Observe Outside of Pride Month?
One category of day that the queer community observes is a supportive day. These are going to be the ones that most closely resemble Pride Month. They are about celebrating part of our community or a life stage that most - if not all - of us went through.
One of the biggest ones that I would highly recommend adding to your marketing calendar is National Coming Out Day. This holiday is celebrated annually on October 11. Coming out stories are everywhere in media these days, from books to movies and more. Coming out takes courage, and we celebrate that courage. (One quick side note: not coming out also takes courage, because there are so many reasons why someone would not feel safe coming out, and protecting yourself is an act of bravery. No one should feel pressured to come out, ever.)
Incorporating this day into your marketing calendar - whether by social media post, blog, or other copy - would be a great way to engage with the queer community outside of Pride Month.
Another type of day we observe is a remembrance day. These are days where we acknowledge that the community has faced and still faces violence, and we remember those who have lost their lives to that violence in the prior year.
The day in this category that I would recommend adding to your marketing calendar is International Transgender Day of Remembrance. It is celebrated annually on November 20.
The copy you could write for this day could remember any local trans folks who have unfortunately passed or make a clear statement that you and your company state for an end to violence against trans people.
A type of a third type of day that the community observes is a visibility day or a visibility week. These days and weeks are used to call attention to parts of the community that typically are not centered when people talk about the queer community. Basically, this can be anyone who is not a wealthy white gay cisgender man.
There are a number of these. We just closed out Non-Binary Awareness Week and Day. In April 2025, we will observe Lesbian Visibility Week, which will culminate in Lesbian Visibility Day on April 26. These weeks and days are a joyful way to call attention to these parts of our community and recognize what they bring to the queer community as well as the issues that are specific to them.
Incorporating some of these days would again allow you to develop authentic connection with your local queer community. Your copy and marketing strategy could be as simple as posting on social media to recognize them. Look at your current marketing efforts to add these days to them, so that you essentially do what you are already doing but engaging more with your local queer community.
Finally, make sure to go back to your research to see if there are any particular days that are important to your local queer community. Every locality has its own history, and there might be a day that’s not on the national or international calendar. Incorporating those days into your overall marketing strategy would be a really excellent way to strengthen those authentic connections you are building with your local queer community.
How to Pick Days for Pride Copy Outside of Pride
As I mentioned, the best way to incorporate these days into your overall marketing strategy is to look at what you are doing already and find ways to fold these days into those efforts. Do you have a large social media following for your business? Post about the days with a quality picture or graphic to acknowledge or celebrate the day. Are you more of a newsletter business? Include a statement in the newsletter that will be sent before the day. Are blogs your thing? Add a blog post to publish when the day rolls around. Going the extra mile is great, but it’s also amazing to make us an important part of what you are already doing.
You probably also won’t be able to incorporate every single one of our days and weeks, but one tip I definitely want you to follow is: choose days throughout the year so that you are consistently engaging with the queer community across the whole year. That will keep you from rainbow washing and also will help you build that connection to the community that will keep us coming back to your business.
